Messaging Limits Explained

WhatsApp sets messaging limits to ensure quality. Here's everything you need to know about limits and how to increase them.

What are Messaging Limits?

Messaging limits determine how many unique users you can initiate conversations with in a 24-hour period. This only applies to business-initiated messages (template messages), not to replies within an active conversation.

How Limits are Calculated

Your messaging limit is based on:

  • Phone number quality rating: High, Medium, or Low
  • Business verification status: Verified or not
  • Message volume history: How many you've sent successfully

Quality Rating Impact

🟢

High Quality

Eligible for limit increases. Keep sending quality content!

🟡

Medium Quality

Limits maintained. Improve content to avoid decrease.

🔴

Low Quality

Risk of limit decrease. Immediate action required!

How to Increase Your Limits

1. Get Business Verified

Complete Meta Business Verification to unlock higher tiers. Unverified accounts are capped at lower limits.

2. Maintain High Quality

Keep your quality rating high by:

  • Only messaging opted-in users
  • Sending relevant, valuable content
  • Respecting user preferences
  • Processing opt-outs immediately

3. Increase Volume Gradually

WhatsApp automatically upgrades your limit when you:

  • Reach at least 50% of your current limit
  • Maintain high quality for 7+ days
  • Have no policy violations

💡 Example: If your limit is 1,000, send at least 500 quality messages over 7 days to trigger an upgrade to 10,000.

What Counts Toward Limits?

✅ Counts Toward Limit

  • • First business-initiated message
  • • Template messages to new users
  • • Starting a new conversation

❌ Does NOT Count

  • • Replies to user messages
  • • Messages in 24-hour window
  • • User-initiated conversations
